Legislative Update - Week 6

March 15, 2013 - Legislative Update

March 15th, was the 61st day of the 105-day legislative session. The cutoff date for bills to pass out of their respective chambers was March 13th. So, we are at the halfway point.

At this time there have been no bills that would adversely impact LEOFF 2 retired officers.

This weekend most members of the House and Senate will be in their local districts to hold town hall meetings with constituents.  Attending a town hall meeting is an excellent opportunity for you to personally share your priorities for the remainder of the Session.

The Senate budget could surface this coming week. Negotiations will then begin. LEOFF 2 remains concerned about LEOFF pension system funding. The budget will tell us if that is threatened.

For LEOFF 2 retired members the reduction of pension contributions would have no impact, at least in the short term.  A reduced funding level could subject the LEOFF 2 system to an underfunded status over time.  Currently that system is funded at about 124% and is very healthy.  LEOFF 2 organizations and the RSPOA consider a reduction of pension contributions as a threat to the long term stability of that system.

Action in the legislature is expected to begin to move quickly now. We will try to keep everyone up-to-date if any items of concern surface. Be prepared to send emails, write and call your legislator if needed.
