April 13, 2013 - A response to AP reporter Mike Baker

Over the last week a series of articles  have been published in newspapers and on news sites throughout the state. They were written by an AP reporter, Mike Baker.  While we generally believe that Mr. Baker is a pretty good reporter it appears that, in this series, he either did not understand his subject or simply went for sensationalism.

April 6, 2013 - Legislative Update

This week the State Senate released their version of the budget, SB 5034 and passed it out of the Senate Ways & Means Committee. The Senate version of the budget does not raise taxes so the spending level is lower than the version released by Governor Inslee.

March 15, 2013 - Legislative Update

March 15th, was the 61st day of the 105-day legislative session. The cutoff date for bills to pass out of their respective chambers was March 13th. So, we are at the halfway point.  At this time there have been no bills that would adversely impact LEOFF 1.

February 28, 2013 - LEOFF COLA

The Washington State Actuary has declared the LEOFF 1 COLA to be 2.54% effective April 2, 2013, payable April 30. The COLA will be payable beginning April 30, 2013.  State checks will show the increase as of the April 30th check.  City checks will decrease by the same amount.

January 22, 2013 - Legislative Update
Friday, February 22nd. was the Policy Committee cutoff day for Legislature. The cutoff means that House bills that did not pass out of a House Committee and Senate bills that did not pass out of a Senate policy committee are considered "dead". The cutoff deadline for legislation in fiscal committees (Appropriations, Transportation, and Capital Budget) is March 1st. Remember, however, that the Legislature has many ways around these cutoff dates. Still it is a good indicator of which pieces of legislation will die in committee.

January 15, 2013 - The New DRS Director
Marcie Frost will direct the Department of Retirement Systems, after currently serving as Retirement Systems’ deputy director.  Marci has effectively been running DRS for some time now as the former Director, Steve Hill, was actually serving as Director of the Health Care Authority and DRS.  We do not anticipate any significant changes.

January 14, 2013 - The New Legislative Session
The new session of the legislature started on January 14th.  At this time we know of no new attacks on LEOFF 1, but it is wise to remain alert.  Follow the more link below for information about the legislators.

October 1, 2012 - The Merger Battle
As you are aware we were able to kill the merger bill in the last legislative session. That makes two sessions where we have fought and won this battle.
